Interview with Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira (1 March 2006)

Interview with Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira, the decane of Classical Studies in Portugal. Renown "author of translations", she dislikes this trade and considers it a burden, a consequence of her field of research. One of the first translation exercises of this poliglot was the translation into Portuguese of Greek classics for a students' scenic group at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Her work comprises more than 300 titles, such as translations, papers, books, and encyclopedia articles. Yet, her passion are Greek vases.

Presentation about Internet and its impact in the Learning-Teaching process / A Internet e as suas implicações no processo de Ensino-Aprendizagem

Very old skool style presentation...

Internet and its impact in the Learning-Teaching process / A Internet e as suas implicações no processo de Ensino-Aprendizagem

This piece of archaeology was almost lost... I found it in the garage while scavenging old university "memorabilia". Not quite about translation but it's worth the effort since it's from a time when desktops were rare in most Portuguese schools, laptops were for university teachers and wannabe CEOs. In those days the Portuguese web was already growing, but striving for contents, dedicated data and information. Despite difficulties and limitations a number of teachers was already "pressing the right buttons", even before the Magalhães had hit the playground...

(Note: Magalhães is a cheap but efficient classroom laptop showcased by the Portuguese Ministry of Education and exported to a growing number of countries, including Venezuela and Brazil.)

Presentation on Bilingualism: Characteristics, benefits and the translator's circumstance / Bilinguismo: Características, [...] o caso do tradutor

This is the presentation I had prepared for my paper on bilingualism (I've featured it in this blog too). Despite focused on the individual implications of such phenomena, I've added some illustrations on more practical daily life issues, such as traffic signs, politics, and humour in several European countries. The selection was based on proximity factors for the original audience, so put those thoughts to rest, eheheh, there's no Eurocentric raving here... in fact I tried to present examples taken from less known bilingual communities! Can You identify them?

Other stuff in the bookshelf

Nowadays, translation is becoming more and more related with data gathering, data mining, information management and cultural mediation. Therefore, in order to meet the high-standards the market expects, the responsible professional needs sources of information, which are solid, updated, and authoritative. Of course, we refer to specialised dictionaries (both monolingual and bilingual), websites, glossaries, encyclopaedias, “handbooks” and other types of literature covering the theme of the document the professional is tackling.

We won’t take more time writing about dictionaries, except for this list…

Some of the tools in the "workshop"

Every trade has its own tools and translation is no exception. Nowadays, the diversity of publications, electronic dictionaries, online terminology databases, CAT (computer-aided translation) software, and even eye-catching online automated translation services bring together the two texts in translation (source and target texts).

We do our best to keep our shelves and bookmarks updated. You are welcome to take a look at our tools cabinet...
